RATIONALE FOR COMPLIANCE JUDGMENT

The Nashville State Technical Community College (NSCC) policy on Academic Freedom complies with the Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) Policy on Academic Freedom and Responsibility [1].  The campus policy is included at the end of the Academic Affairs section of The Faculty and Staff Handbook [2].  There have been no incidents involving issues of academic freedom on the campus.  Some faculty have, in recent years, expressed concern about academic freedom as related to teaching online courses that have been developed by another faculty member.  Since teaching these courses is voluntary on the part of the faculty member, however, this has not been considered a substantive issue.

Nashville State also recognizes and publicizes TBR policy on Student Rights and Responsibilities [3], which is based on the AAUP statement of Rights and Freedoms of Students.  The student policy is referenced in the Faculty and Staff Handbook [4] and the 2006-2007 Student Handbook [5].
