Professional Experience

My work and teaching experience covers many years. I am a lifelong resident of Nashville and I attended local public school. I graduated from Hillsboro High School and then attended Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Tennessee where I received my Bachelors of Science Degree in Business Administration (Economic and Pre-Law). I then attended law school at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville where I received my Doctorate degree in Law. I have also studied law in several foreign countries including Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, and Finland. I returned to Nashville where I was a practicing trial attorney for almost 20 years and managing partner of Doty and Doty, Attorneys.

As a trial attorney, I have experience in business and the legal issues that arise in this course. My Teaching Philosophy

I believe you will find this class unlike any you have ever taken. This class is designed to use a textbook with real cases book. Most of these cases are of current legal and ethical interest. The problem with law is that it is not always the same as ethics. These concepts are different for different people and different groups of people. Not all of us have the same legal and ethical beliefs. For instance, should a company have the right to refuse employment to a gay individual? Should an individual have the right to download any music over the internet that they want to or "burn" DVD's of current movies? Both of these issues are covered in this course or similar courses. The problem is, how do we know what is "right" and "ethical" and what is not? That is what we will explore this semester.

My teaching philosophy is to try to get students to think about legal and ethical issues in a way that they have never thought about them before. Our textbook will have real legal and ethical issues and we will see that many of these have two sides to these issues. I hope that this course will be a challenge to you the students and through this challenge, you will learn.

Study hard, learn a lot and make a good grade. Dr. G. Howard Doty
