Each graduate that places an order by the deadline will receive a cap and gown, a graduation information packet, and other related items and information. Please plan to spend 30 minutes on campus to receive all materials.

Clarksville, Dickson, and Humphreys County Campuses

Caps and gowns will be sent to your satellite campuses, along with all related items and information. Cap and Gown pick-up dates are the same for all campuses. Please note locations and phone number for your campus contacts.

FAQ's
How should my cap be worn?

The cap should be worn so that the Mortarboard is level. It should not be tilted to the back or side of the head. The crown should be approximately one inch above the eyebrow.

How do I tell the front from the back of the cap?

The front of the cap is indicated on the inside of the crown.

Should the cap be removed anytime during the graduation ceremony?

Your cap should not be removed during the graduation ceremony.

How do I take care of my gown?

The gown should be removed immediately from the package and placed on a hanger.

The gown seemed wrinkled when I took it out of the package, should I send it to the cleaners?

The gown should not be washed or dry-cleaned. It may be pressed with a cool iron or steamed.

What should I wear underneath the gown?

You should wear lightweight, comfortable clothing.

How do I wear the tassel?

Tassels are worn over the left temple at the beginning of the ceremony. After receiving your diploma, but before your photograph is taken, move the tassel to your right temple.

Commencement Rehearsal

TSU and Nashville State Officers will be on duty to assist with parking. There will be several TSU Shuttles to transport graduates from the parking lot to the Olympic Statue. Please be on time. Graduates will rehearse the commencement ceremony and will be given instructions on line up, processional, seating, and the recessional. Caps and gowns are not needed for the rehearsal. Graduates must bring name cards to rehearsal. These cards are issued in the Graduation Information packets. To find out what to expect during rehearsals, click on rehearsal agenda.

You must be on time for line up. Graduates will line up in the back hallways of the Gentry Center in the same order as practiced during the commencement rehearsal. Guests will not be allowed in the line up area.

Commencement Ceremony

Nashville State Community College will celebrate its 55th Commencement Ceremony on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. The ceremony will be held at Howard Gentry Center of Tennessee State University. The Gentry Center is located on Walter S. Davis Boulevard.

Graduates will be allowed to bring an unlimited number of guests. The ceremony will begin with a musical prelude performed by The Capitol Brass Quintet, announcements, and the processional will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m.

Graduates arriving late, after the processional has started, will be directed to sit in the last row(s) of the commencement area during the ceremony. Even if graduates have been to rehearsal, late arrivals will not be allowed to disrupt the ceremony by cutting into line or seating. Late arrivals will still have their names called, walk across the stage and have graduation photos made.

Doors to the arena will close at 5:50 p.m. If guests arrive after 5:50 p.m., they will be directed to the second floor level to enter the arena. If guests are disabled, they will be allowed to wait in the lobby area until the processional has concluded to enter the arena.

Guests must stay in their seat to take pictures. Guests are not allowed on the main Gentry Center floor to take photos. There will be professional photographers taking photos of graduates before they enter the stage and after they receive their diplomas. Note: Balloons and noise makers are NOT allowed in the Gentry Center. These items will be confiscated by NSCC Officers and/or TSU Police and will not be returned.

Please tell your guest NOT to bring these items into the Ceremony/gym area.

NSCC Graduation Ceremony Important Information

  • Rehearsal is mandatory.
  • Arrive to rehearsal by 1:45 PM. Rehearsal will begin at 2:00 PM sharp!

  • Bring your Name Card (Call Card) to rehearal and to the ceremony.

  • Bring your Cap and Gown to the ceremony only along with your Call Card.

  • Wear dark colored pants, skirts, and shoes. No blue jeans, tennis shoes, or flip flops. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

  • All electronic dvices should be silenced at both the rehearsal and the ceremony. Please tell your guests.

  • Please instruct your guests not to bring or use noise makers of any type during the ceremony. Also, balloons will not be allowed in the Gentry Center

  • Traffic is heavy. Please plan ahead to allow plenty of time for line up.

  • Line-Up for the Graduation Ceremony is at 5:00 PM. Graduates arriving late, after the processional has started, will be directed to sit in the last row(s) of the commencement area during the ceremony. Even if graduates have been to rehearsal, late arrivals will not be allowed to disrupt the ceremony by cutting into line or seating. Late arrivals will still have their names called to walk across the stage and graduation photos made.

  • You must stay for the entire ceremony. Once seated you cannot leave.

  • Do not bring purses or other bags to the ceremony. Make arrangements for your guests to hold it for you. You will not be allowed to march in with anything in hand other than your call card. Do not decorate your gown. Only academic cords and stoles may be worn around your neck.

  • To our guests with disabilities: A person with a disability, plus one additional person in your party will be allowed to sit in the reserved accommodated section. All other guests will be required to sit in the stands. Due to space constraints, there will be no exceptions to this rule. Please give this information to your guests.

Directions to Gentry Center, Walter S. Davis Boulevard

From the North, via I-65, or the Northwest, via I-24:

Approaching Nashville, I-24 merges with I-65. Continue south on I-65 to I-40 and proceed west. Take the 28th Ave. exit. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp, then go to the third traffic light (Walter S. Davis Blvd) and turn left—the Howard C. Gentry Center will be on your left.

From the South, via I-65, or from the Southeast, via I-24:

Take either route to I-40 and proceed west. Take the 28th Ave. exit. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp, then go to the third traffic light (Walter S. Davis Blvd) and turn left, the Howard C. Gentry Center will be on your left.

From the East, via I-40:

Take the 28th Ave. exit. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp, go to the third traffic light (Walter S. Davis Blvd) and turn left—the Howard C. Gentry Center will be on your left.

From the West, via I-40

Take exit 207. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp and continue to the traffic light (28th Ave), Make a right at 28th Ave, and a left at the second traffic light (Walter S. Davis Blvd)—the Howard C. Gentry Center will be on your left.


Parking & Transportation

Shuttle service is being provided for graduates and guests from the main Gentry Center parking lot to the Olympic Statue. You will enter the Gentry Center by using the walk way. Wheelchair-accessible shuttles will also be available. The Gentry Center has several parking areas with a number of handicapped spaces.

Nashville State Security Officers, along with TSU Police, will be stationed in the parking areas to direct parking to the Gentry Center. Directional signage will also be in place.

During the commencement rehearsal and for the ceremony,TSU shuttles will transport graduates and guest from the parking lot to the the Olympic Statue. Please take the walkway to the Gentry Center.

Overflow parking for the Commencement Ceremony will be at W.S. Davis and Tigerbell Blvd. There will be a TSU Police at this location to direct you to parking. Shuttle service will also be provided for this area before and after Commencement Ceremony.

If you park on Walter S. Davis Blvd. the shuttles cannot pick you up. However, follow the signs to the overflow lots and the shuttles will be able to transport you to the Olympic Statue near the Gentry Center.

Accessible Seating and Services in the Gentry Center

There is a restricted area on the arena floor of the Gentry Center designated for guests who use walkers, scooters, or wheelchairs, and for those with limited mobility. This area is marked with signage and there will be personnel along with Security to assist those that fit these criteria.

Please know that only one other family member can sit with the person needing accessible seating, a total of two people per family in this restricted area.

Due to the number of guests with limited mobility who attend the NSCC commencement ceremony at the Gentry Center, this area has limited seating. These restrictions are designed to minimize accidents, and to allow emergency access, if needed. We appreciate your assistance in adhering to these guidelines.

Please let your families know before Tuesday, May 7th about this designated area for those guests who use scooters, wheelchairs, and walkers, or have limited mobility. Please inform them that only one family member can sit with each limited mobility guest. It is our desire to make accommodations for those who need a more accessible location to view the commencement ceremony. With you and your families’ cooperation and understanding, we will be better able to accommodate many of our guests with mobility challenges.

Tips for Graduates

  • To continue your edcuation at NSCC after graduation, reapply by completing a new application and declaring a new degree program.

  • You can continue to request copies of your transcripts by completing the transcript request from. The form can be found on our website at www.nscc.edu/records.

  • Please update your address in our system so that we can continue to communicate with you about new programs and/or events at NSCC. Update your address by completing a change of status form located on our website or update your local address via MYNSCC.

  • If you require a replacement or duplicate copy of your diploma, please complete the replacement diploma form located on our website. The cost for a replacement or duplicate diploma is $15.00.

  • A.A.S. Degree & Technical Certificate graduates: Remember to contact Career Services in S-206 (615-353-3248) for free assistance with your job search, resume writing, interview practice and access to position listings for graduates.

Commencement Photos

Each graduate should expect to be photographed three times during the NSCC Commencement Ceremony.

  1. First photo is taken before you go across the stage
  2. Second photo is taken as you shake hands with commencement Guest, and President on stage
  3. Third photo is taken off stage just before returning to your seat.

For best results, remember to pull back your tassel (as well as any long hair) from your face. Footprints on the floor will mark the place for you to stand for the first and third photo. After the person in front of you is finished, simply step onto these footprints, pause briefly, and smile at the photographer. There is no need to pause or look at the photographer for the second photo.

GradImages® was the official photographer for Commencement. Your proofs will be available after the ceremony. To view your proofs online, please visit the GradImages website. Each graduate will receive a name card, which is to be brought to the graduation ceremony announcer. This card is also the only method for the graduation photographers to contact you. To ensure that proofs reach you by mail as well as a direct link to the online images, please print your home address - plus a “non-edu” e-mail address on the back of this card.

Photo Disclaimer

By participating in and attending the Graduation Commencement ceremonies, you and your guests agree to be videotaped, audio recorded, and photographed by the office of Creative Services and its designees. You and your guests give permission and absolute right to Nashville State Community College and its employees to use/publish the images and audio from graduation to promote Nashville State Community College, its students, and its programs. You waive the right to view these images and release Nashville State from any liability associated with the use of said images and audio. You agree that neither you nor any agent representing you will receive any monetary compensation or fee for use of said images and audio now or anytime in the future.
