This course has been designed to provide the student with professional investigative techniques that will enable them to increase the solution rate for death scenes. Students will review the recommended actions they should take whether they are the first officer at the scene, the investigator, or the crime scene technician. The importance of the team approach will be emphasized, as well as techniques that should be considered by the officers responding to death scenes. Upon completion of this course, participants will have a better awareness of their role as death scene investigators. They will be able to follow prescribed steps in the management of these cases and properly document their efforts for future court presentation. Topics include: suicide investigations, death scene preservation, investigative procedures at the death scene, death scene techniques, infant death investigation, the role of the medical examiner and causes and manner of death.
