General Information
Nashville State offers four levels of ESL (English as a Second Language) courses from the advanced beginner level to the low advanced level. These courses are designed to teach immigrants and international students academic English to prepare them for college-level coursework.
English Placement
Students who do not have English as their first/home language take the Michigan Plus Test for English placement unless they score 19 or higher on the Reading and English portions of the ACT, or have transfer credit for ENGL 1010 from a U.S. college. Michigan Plus Test scores are used for placement purposes only at Nashville State and cannot be reported to other institutions. If there are questions about a student's first language, please contact the ESL Testing Specialist at 615-353-3380, or in Room S-110, on the first floor of the Student Services Building.
ESL Accommodations
ESL accommodations may be available for those who complete all recommended ESOL courses. Those who do not wish to take ESOL courses must sign a waiver of ESL assistance and are not eligible for ESL accommodations.
ESOL Courses
Many ESL students are not ready for Learning Support Reading and Writing courses. If English is not your first language, especially if you have been speaking English regularly for less than three years, you may need to complete one or more ESOL course(s) before you are ready for the level of work in the Learning Support Reading and Writing classes. Remember that Learning Support Reading and Writing courses were designed to meet the needs of students who have completed 12 years of school in English and who have lived most of their lives in this country.
