WebAIM Principles of Design: http://webaim.org/intro/#principles (new window)

This introductory session will focus on the first five of seven items listed below:

  1. Alternative Text: Alternative text descriptions shall be included with any image or other non-text element.
  2. Document Structure: Headers should be used to structure the page. Heading 1 shall define the title of the page, and Heading 2 shall define the first division of page content.
  3. Data Tables: Data tables should include a caption and table headers. Layout tables should not be used to organize page content.
  4. Meaningful Links: Course links should be descriptive of content and open in a new window. If the source is located outside of the course, links shall open in a new window and shall be identified as such.
  5. Text Color: Do not use color alone to convey meaning. Color text used for emphasis should also be italicized or bolded. Be mindful that there is high contrast between text color and background color.
  6. Video Transcript/Captions: Video shall have captions synchronized with the audio. In the event that videos cannot contain captions, time-coded transcripts should be provided on the page with the video.
  7. Audio Transcript: A transcript is provided for audio content.
