Case Study Student Learning Objectives

At the successful completion of this case, the students should be able to:

  •
Understand and apply basic structural failure theories to determine the most likely failure mode of a complex structure.
  •
Research and analyze a large set of engineering data (reports, drawings, and photographs) and assemble the appropriate pieces into a coherent whole to provide information about possible sequences of events and scenarios leading to structural failure.
  •
Communicate technical findings through both oral and written means informally in small problem-solving teams and formally in class presentations.
  •
Develop, construct, test, and monitor an engineering model that demonstrates a likely failure mode of a structure.
