To start PowerPoint, click on start on the task bar. Choose All Programs. Point to Microsoft Office and select Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003.
To create a new presentation, click on File, New. There are four options. Option 1 is a "blank presentation." This creates a white background with black text. One slide is presented, and you will create all additional slides. The second option is "From design template." Scroll through the template choices until you find a template that you want to use. Click on the thumbnail of the template. One slide is presented, and you will need to create the additional slides. "From AutoContent wizard" is the third option. The AutoContent wizard box opens. Click on Next. Select the type of presentation. Click on Next. Select the type of output. We will select "on screen presentation." Click Next. Give the presentation a title. Click Next, and then click Finish. Here you have a series of slides presented with suggestions for content. "From existing presentation" is the fourth choice. From the presentations on your computer, select a presentation that you want to begin with, and click Create New. The slides are presented. You can delete slides, add slides, or make changes to slides as desired.
This is a Microsoft PowerPoint work area. At the top of the screen is the menu bar. Just below the menu bar is a toolbar. The big working space is called the Slide Pane. In that space are boxes with dashed borders called Placeholders. All text is typed in a placeholder. On the left is the Outline/Slide Pane. There are two tabs to toggle from one to the other. The slide pane displays thumbnails that you can click to navigate among slides. The outline pane displays presentation text without graphics in outline format. The outline view can be used to enter text. At the bottom of the screen is the Notes Pane, which can be expanded. You will notice "Click to add notes." Notes are used when giving the presentation. At the right is the Task Pane. Currently displayed is the Slide Layout Task Pane. At the lower left corner of the screen are three view buttons: normal view--currently displayed, slide sorter view that displays multiple slides on one screen, and the slide show view which is the view used to give a presentation.
There are two or three ways to navigate from slide to slide in PowerPoint. You can go from one slide to the other by clicking on the thumbnails--notice as I move from one slide to the other. The Previous Slide and Next Slide buttons are located on the right side of the screen. This is the Next Slide button. Notice as I click. This is the Previous Slide button. You can also use the Page Up and Page Down keys on the keyboard. Using the scroll bar, you can scroll, and it indicates the slide number that is being displayed.
To save a presentation, click on either the Save icon on the standard toolbar or select File and choose Save. Name the presentation; in this case, the name will be "Digital Cameras." Locate the file folder where you want to save the presentation and click Save.
This is a presentation that I opened and changed some of the text. The title and subtitle have been changed. I want to keep the original copy in case I want to go back to it, but I want to save this under a different name. Choose File, Save as. I want to save this in the same location as the other presentation, which was titled "Digital Cameras." I will change the name to "Digital Cameras Revised," and click Save. I now have two copies of this presentation--one named "Digital Cameras," and a second copy under "Digital Cameras Revised."
To close a presentation that has been saved, simply click on File and choose Close. The presentation closes.
To open a presentation, click on File, Open. Locate the folder where the presentation is saved. Click on the title of the presentation--or title of the file--and click Open.
