Update from the President
by Dr. Shanna L. Jackson
Greetings Fellow Falcons,
August is right around the corner and a new academic year will soon begin! There is a tremendous amount of work happening at all campuses to prepare for our new and returning students. Whether you are in a student facing position or not, your work continues to make a difference at Nashville State. We are Moving Forward – Together! Below are a few updates for the Office of the President:
Convocation – We are set to kick off the new year in superhero style on Thursday, August 15! All full-time and regular part-time employees are expected to attend (unless directed otherwise by your supervisor). We will be at the White Bridge campus from 8:00-3:30pm. You are invited to wear your favorite superhero t-shirt (no costumes please); capes are optional. Lunch will be provided compliments of the Foundation, and the Engagement Committee has lunchtime activities planned. More details will be coming through email soon.
Dickson Campus – The early design for the Dickson County Center of Higher Education was approved by the State Building Commission at the July meeting. I look forward to sharing renderings of the campus at Convocation.
Core Value: Learning – This Spring I was selected with nine other Nashvillians for the Young American Leaders Program (YALP). Obviously, age is relative for program participation (smile). At the end of June, we joined 13 other cities from across the country at Harvard’s Business School for an amazing professional development experience. Being led by Harvard faculty we used case studies and presentations to study cross-sector collaboration. Our team will continue to meet throughout the year to use what we have learned to support a project for the Mayor’s Office.
Enrollment Update – We are continuing to see good momentum heading into the final weeks of registration. As of July 24, Fall applications are up 8.8%, Fall headcount is up 7.4% and FTE is up 5.7%. Stay data informed by visiting our new Data Access page. Please contact Institutional Research if you have questions.
Support – HR recently sent an update on our benefits concerning behavioral health care. Please reach out to the resources available if you or someone you care about needs support. EAP services are offered at no cost to all benefit-eligible employees and eligible family members. Visit Here4tn.com for more information.
I am so excited about Academic year 24-25! We are right on the edge of a breakthrough in significantly increasing student outcomes and moving closer to our Vision 2030 targets. I cannot overstate how the work you do everyday matters! For many of us, the weeks ahead are the busiest of the year. Please remember to take care of yourself and check on those around you. Falcons Fly Together!

Exploring Opportunities: Federal Work Study Program and Upcoming Virtual Job Fair
By Brian N. Lee, Dual Enrollment & Federal Work Study Coordinator, Financial Aid
The Federal Work Study (FWS) program is a need-based financial aid program that provides part-time employment to students with financial need, allowing them to earn money to help pay for their educational expenses. This program is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain work experience while attending school, often in positions that are related to their field of study. Through FWS, students not only earn a paycheck but also build valuable skills and networks that can be beneficial for their future careers.
In an exciting development, we are thrilled to announce the upcoming Virtual Job Fair for Federal Work Study positions. This event is designed to connect students with potential supervisors and showcase the variety of FWS positions available for the upcoming academic year. Here are the details:
Event Details:
- Date: August 30, 2024
- Time: 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm
- Format: Virtual
This Virtual Job Fair will serve as a dynamic platform for students to explore numerous employment opportunities that align with their skills, interests, and academic goals. By participating in this event, students can engage directly with supervisors, learn more about the roles on offer, and potentially secure a position that not only supports them financially but also enhances their academic experience.
We are inviting supervisors to participate in this event by creating virtual booths where they can present the positions available within their departments. This interactive setup will allow students to ask questions, gather information, and make informed decisions about their employment prospects.
Supervisor Participation: We are delighted to extend an invitation to supervisors who are interested in being a part of this event. Your participation is crucial in helping us provide students with meaningful work opportunities. If you would like to join us and set up a virtual booth, please contact brian.lee@nscc.edu at your earliest convenience. Your involvement will significantly contribute to the success of this event and the future success of our students.
The Federal Work Study program is a vital component of the student financial aid landscape, providing essential support to students in need. By participating in the Virtual Job Fair, both students and supervisors can work together to create a productive and enriching employment experience. We look forward to a successful event and to the valuable contributions of all participants.
For more information about the FWS program and the Virtual Job Fair, please feel free to email our office at financial.aid@nscc.edu or visit our website. Let’s make this event a milestone in connecting talent with opportunity.

From the Desk of Academic Affairs
By Dr. Jo Williams, Vice President of Academic Affairs & Workforce Development
As the summer winds down and we gear up for the fall semester, I remain excited about the great work that we all do at Nashville State. Although the summer months in education are known to be a bit slower, Nashville State has been bustling with students enrolled in summer courses and workforce training programs. Additionally, the College has been engaged in exciting activities across our beautiful campuses.
This summer, we partnered with the Belmont Fast Forward program to offer incoming freshmen two weeks of free summer programming that allowed them to take NSCC 1010 at no cost and engage in lunch & learn workshops covering a variety of topics. The program supported 41 students at the North Davidson and Southeast campuses.
On July 1st, we welcomed two new deans to our Falcon family. Dr. Shawn Wild is our new STEM dean and Dr. Christie Ferguson will serve as interim dean for Business and Professional Studies. I am excited about the new ideas and fresh energy they bring to Academic Affairs.
I had the pleasure of joining Student Affairs at a reception honoring newly inducted members of the National Society of Leadership Success. It is always exciting to celebrate the success of our talented students and support them as they learn and grow.
Congratulations are in order for ten faculty members who earned tenure and promotion this year. TBR approved promotion applications for David Adams, Amy Blum, Robyn Lear, Rachel Lewis, Ruben Saroukhanian, and Marian Soliman. Additionally, tenure applications were approved for Kathy Sorenson, Donald Turner, Mary Elizabeth Wilson-Patton, and David Edgington. I congratulate each of them on this distinguished accomplishment. I’d also like to acknowledge members of the tenure and promotion committees for the time and effort they commit to this process. We are fortunate to have so many talented and dedicated faculty serving our students and representing the College.
To quote Dr. Jackson, Nashville State is on the move! I look forward to welcoming everyone back to campus at convocation in August.

Employee of the Month for May is Bryan Trout!
By Karina Davis, Student Support Specialist I, Staff Assembly Committee, Chair 2024/2025

This is what nominators had to say about Bryan Trout, Computer Technician, Dickson and Humphreys Campuses:
Bryan does a great job keeping our technology up and running at both campuses and helping students when they have technical issues on campus. He goes above and beyond his job description to help his colleagues and does so with a smile. He volunteers to help at off-campus sites such as going to help with testing at the Turney Center to help inmates further their education. He is respectful by always letting the director and staff know when he will be taking days off and asking ahead of time if anything needs to be done for events on campus regarding technology. I truly cannot say enough good things about Bryan and his work ethic at both campuses.
We congratulate you, Bryan Trout, for your exemplary performance, hard work, and dedication!

The Workforce Minute
By Megan Murray, Business Operations Coordinator, The Center for Workforce Development and Continuing Education
The Center for Workforce Development and Continuing Education would like to spotlight an important way we contribute funding for the college. You may have heard a member of our team use the term “contact hour.” It’s because around this time every year, Workforce reports to the Tennessee Higher Education Commission the amount of contact hours we have accrued the past Fiscal Year.
What is a contact hour? A contact hour is 60 minutes of instruction (non-credit) or a learning activity. We calculate the total amount by number of participants multiplied by the number of total hours of the program. For example:
6 participants x 40 Hours = 240 Contact Hours per the program
The reason this report is so important is because it is a component of the outcome-based funding formula. Based on the number of hours we report, the more funding we receive, and in turn, the more services we end up providing for the next academic year!
Why tell you all this? Because we need your help! Our contact hours do not stop within the Center for Workforce Development and Continuing Education. The following can be included in our reports:
- A course or activity that provides an individual with occupational, technical and/or soft skills for the workplace
- The goal of the course is to increase the individual’s opportunity in the labor market
- The course or activity improves human knowledge, skills and ability related to the workforce

The course cannot count towards institutional credit or an academic award, however, if you had a program, activity or event that applies anytime during 7/1/2023 – 6/30/2024, please send the name of the program, the number of individuals, the length of the activity, and if it was associated with an outside organization to Megan.Murray@nscc.edu and we will be happy to include it in our report. These activities could be facilitated by NSCC faculty/staff on campus or off campus or an employer/organization providing training at one of our campuses.
The Center for Workforce and Continuing Education thanks you for your participation, and we look forward to more collaborations this next academic year!
