Transferring

The following are tips for assisting students with developing a successful transfer plan:

1.       Students should research schools of interest

a.       Are they a good fit for the student?

b.      Do they have the degree program the student is interested in?

c.       Has the student visited the campus and met with an advisor?

d.      Has the student checked  transfer equivalency forms and NSCC articulation agreements, or the admissions department to determine if their credits will transfer?

e.      Does the student know what is required for the degree plan?

f.        How does the cost impact the student's decision?  Is there financial aid or scholarships available?

2.       Students should know requirements and deadlines for the transfer school(s) of their choice.

a.     The student should know the admissions deadline for the semester applying for and gather any information the school may need , which may include, but is not limited to:

                                                               i.      All college transcripts

                                                             ii.      High school transcript

                                                            iii.      Immunization records

                                                           iv.      Admissions application

                                                             v.      Application Fee

b.      The student should know the recommended deadline to turn in the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for Financial Aid and if they require additional documentation or forms.

c.       The student should know the scholarship requirements and deadlines for the school(s) in which he/she is interested in transferring to.

d.       In most cases, the student DOES NOT need to wait until he/she has  graduated to apply.  If the student has not heard from the school for a while, the student shouldcontact the school to find out the status of the application- this should be done BEFORE deadlines.

e.      For scholarships, the same thing applies- in most cases, the student DOES NOT need to wait until admitted to apply.

3.     The student must maintain their grades - many schools will not accept a course as transfer credit if the student does not earn a “C” or higher.

4.   Please note that if a student will transfer to a Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) school (Austin Peay, East Tennessee State, Memphis, Middle Tennessee State, Tennessee State, and Tennessee Tech) you can check out the following link to find out how credits at Nashville State will transfer to other Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) schools  (*for General Education History Requirement, these colleges will only accept HIST 2010 and HIST 2020, with some of them also accepting HIST 2030):

Did you know that Tennessee State University has an advisor who is located on the Nashville State campus?  Please call or email Kayla Wiseman at 353-3577 or kayla.wiseman@nscc.edu to schedule an appointment or ask questions.
