Online Training Modules for Developing an Online Course

The following modules are designed to help faculty develop fully online courses. The basic training includes all nine modules. Faculty who are not developing courses may sign up for any one or all of the modules.

Please register for each module separately by replying to the email that will be sent out a few days prior to the beginning date for the module. All modules will remain open for an additional week after the ending date. If you find that you cannot complete the work by the closing week, you may sign up for the module again the next time it is offered.

Please read the descriptions below to determine whether the material fits your needs.

Module I: Getting Started with the Course Development Template

Description: In this module you will request a D2L shell from the Help Desk, download and import a template, revise the content in the Getting Started module and evaluate the revisions based on the Quality Matters standards, create a News item, and participate in discussions

Module 2: Planning and Developing One Learning Module

Description: In this module you will plan and edit one Lesson instruction page and compare your Lesson instruction page to the Quality Matters standards.

Module 3: Creating PDF and HTML Pages

Description: In this module, you will create a partial syllabus in Word and save it as PDF, create a partial syllabus using an HTML editor (Expression Web or editor of your choice) then upload the documents to a D2L shell. Faculty will view videos showing  simple ways to evaluate content for accessibility.

Module 4: Managing Content and Content Display Settings

Description: This is an easy-to-complete module. You will create a Module and Topic in D2L, edit items in Content, move and reorder items, and set Display Settings for the modules.You will also discuss the pros and cons of various file types for course content.

Module 5: Adding PowerPoint Presentations to Your Course

Description: In this module, you evaluate one of your PowerPoint presentations, make changes to improve the presentation, upload the presentation to your course, and post a discussion about how to add interactivity to the presentation.

Module 6: Creating, Importing, and Managing Quizzes

Description: In this module, you will consider options for obtaining or creating test questions, create or import a test, set quiz options, view a video showing the student view of a test and a video showing how to grade a test. You will also participate in a discussion about how to minimize cheating.

Module 7: Creating Submitting, and Grading Assignments

Description: In this exercise, you will create an assignment and attach a grading rubric, view a video of a student submitting an assignment and viewing the feedback from the instructor and of a teacher grading an assignment. Participate in a discussion about assignments aligning with learning outcomes.

Module 8: Creating and Managing Discussions, Groups, and Email

Description: In this module, you will read content about "Discussions," create a discussion forum and topic, watch videos about creating and grading discussions, creating groups, and managing email.

Module 9: Creating and Managing the Grade Book

Description: In this module you will watch videos about how to create a points and weighted grade book, use your syllabus and create a grade book in D2L, and discuss ways you can use the syllabus and grade book to clarify grading policies.
