  • Lack of time due to work and family commitments.
  • I’m very happy that we have a Teaching Center, and I’m especially glad to have been a part of the first ACUE cohort!
  • I have not used this year, but have in the past. Some classes were quite interesting and helpful; others not so much.
  • I am 100% supportive of the TC and the personnel who have taken that responsibility. Some things seem repetitive; therefore, I don’t engage weekly. As an adjunct, I engaged in the ‘credit’ gathering process… earned my 18… Not sure what that did for me except deepen my learning and instructional understanding of the educational process. I’m more of a “Problem/Solution/Move on” kind of person.
  • The Teaching Center faculty are amazing, but they are overworked with too little release time or compensation. Too many initiatives are dumped on the Teaching Center that could be handled by other offices. For example, why are Teaching Center faculty expected to organize ALL of convocation when they should only be responsible for the professional development sessions? These are still faculty who have to prepare for their OWN classes. And why are Teaching Center faculty tasked with maintaining their own website and organizing access to recorded presentations when those are highly technical, time intensive tasks that should be handled by professional web maintainers? There seems to be little appreciation or compassion for the amount of work that is dumped on them.
  • The Teaching Center’s services seem to be more directed towards faculty, which is great! However, as a staff member, the majority of professional learning opportunities don’t align with my current role. I still try to attend a variety of these sessions to understand what struggles students and faculty are facing, as well as other relevant information, and to stay up to date. However, it can be awkward when I am placed in breakout groups and am asked about my teaching experiences and I have nothing to offer. It also can make me feel a tad left out, or not invested enough, when folks are encouraged to earn badges. Yet, I cannot justify taking the time to earn these badges and sit in on sessions that do not apply to my current role and responsibilities. I absolutely love the support that the Teaching Center gives, but I think we can maybe create separate badges for staff so they can feel involves, and offer more general topics that are applicable to all NSCC faculty and staff.
  • Excited to see how the relationship between the Teaching Center and the Professional Learning Committee continues to evolve to provide more opportunities for non-faculty to learn from faculty-led sessions without taking away time from faculty looking to learn from one another.
  • Information overload is a problem. Perhaps fewer more relevant sessions would help to make the TC better. The TC leadership has been very good.

Faculty

-The Teaching Center has been a wonderful addition to our college. I have learned so much from them and gotten support as a presenter and as a professor with concerns about a class.

-Many of the workshops are redundant.

-This has been one of the most meaningful projects put in place at the college. Please keep its academic focus. It should not become the dumping ground for all the other training that needs doing at the college.

-I think the Teaching Center is well organized and helps link us with TBR and our sister colleges via their Centers for Teaching and Learning.

-Need more seminars on personal development.

-Thank you, Teaching Center, for all that you do!

Staff

-I get the emails about training opportunities but I feel it’s for Faculty and not Staff. 

-I haven’t had much interactions with the teaching center nor learning center. Had no idea the teaching center existed.

-Wish there had been a N/A option as the Teaching Center is primarily geared toward faculty training.  Most of their offerings are interesting as a topic, but do not generally apply to my specific job.  Although I can figure out how to make the content “work” for me most of the time.  It does feel like faculty is the focal and others are a “by-product” in terms of professional development. I do understand that this is for the Teaching Center and that its focus must be faculty.

-Excellent work.

-Disappointed that even though sessions are promoted as being for the whole college, most sessions are very specific to teaching/not as much of interest to non-faculty.

-Teaching Center is awesome, and offers SO many great opportunities. I’m excited to see a partnership between them and Professional Learning continue to develop.
